In accordance with KISARA’s vision: form responsible teenagers through the peer mentoring approach of, by and for teens. Also part of their mission: Granting IEC (Information, Education and Communication).
KISARA’s volunteers perform various activities providing information that are made with a teenagers approach in mind. As well as programs to support the dissemination of information related to teenagers, such as: lectures, radio broadcasts and face-to-face and online counselling. I’m happy that I can help KISARA with their activities, like lectures that I gave which provided the information about HIV/AIDS for teenagers in communities, schools, as well as lower-class people who are marginalized from public life. Sometimes it makes me sad whenever I hear about misinformation regarding HIV/AIDS that have become myths in society. Stigma and dicrimination are some things that are often uttered by teenagers who don’t know the real facts about HIV/AIDS. It makes me even more sad and I asked myself: ‘What is wrong? What can I do to make it right?’ To answer that question, me and my friends in KISARA actively provide information related to HIV and AIDS, so that the public -especially teenagers- know more about how the dissemination, transmission and the prevention of HIV. We hope that soon there’s no more discrimination toward HIV positive people. The teenagers have to suppress the increase of HIV virus, starting with changing their behavior as they have the risk to spread the HIV virus as well as giving the right informations about HIV/AIDS to their family, friends and society in general.
Do you know that the iceberg phenomenon can’t be denied anymore? Every year, there are an increasing number of HIV-infected teenagers. Right now, KISARA has a project that provides free VCT for teenagers. So, if teenagers know the right information about HIV/AIDS, then they will change their risky behaviour and the number of teenagers with HIV will decrease.
This is one little but very important thing that can prevent the spread of the HIV virus.
