Geita Gold Mine (GGM) has donated Sh700 million to government and private organisations in an effort to fight HIV/AIDS, which has to a large extent affected youth, who are major drivers of the country's economy in Tanzania.
Officially 1.6 million people are living with HIV in the country, with new recent infections falling among people aged between 15 and 25 years. GGM managing director Terry Mulpeter said the mining firm had for the past 15 years been donating funds to contribute in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
He was speaking during a ceremony to donate the Sh700 million to various local organisations. They included the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (Tacaids) which got Sh250 million, the Benjamin W. Mkapa Foundation (Sh100 million), Geita's Moyo wa Huruma Orphanage (Sh150 million) and Uviki Geita (Sh50 million).
GGM vice president Simon Shayo said the fight against HIV/AIDS would be successful if everybody and every organisation sensitised the public and contributed funds. Way to go GGM! Let's stop the spread of HIV!
